Over 400 restaurants and retail outlets in Hong Kong launch new menus and promotions in support of “Diet Change Not Climate Change”
(22 April 2022, Hong Kong) Green Monday Group, the award-winning social venture and sustainability pioneer celebrates a decade of driving their mission for sustainable living worldwide. Green Monday started as a movement on Earth Day in 2012, championing the adoption of a plant-based diet at least one day per week to take on the world’s most pressing crises of climate change, food insecurity, and public health. Over the past 10 years, what began as a local initiative has grown into a global, multi-pronged social venture platform that enables corporations, restaurants, schools, and the general public to join efforts in reducing their carbon footprint and promote green, healthy, and sustainable living. During this time, the population of “flexitarians” in Hong Kong has increased significantly from 5% to 40% and the Green Monday movement is now active in 20 markets and continues to grow globally.
It was never an easy journey to promote the idea of a green and sustainable diet 10 years ago, a challenge that Green Monday took up and has successfully led change in Asia’s food scene, making vegetarian and vegan options more accessible to diners across Asia.
Since 2020, Green Monday has organized or co-organized various ESG activities for more than 100 companies from large corporates to nonprofits across different sectors. In 2021, Green Monday donated over 68,000 vegetarian lunch boxes and goodie bags to the community in need, and has also worked with companies to establish CSR best practices. The “Green Monday ESG Coalition” was launched in the same year, aimed to unify businesses with concrete plant-based solutions to build a more sustainable future. Through this coalition, Green Monday teamed up with over 20 corporate signatories to devise actionable roadmaps with quantifiable green strategies and achieve UN sustainable development goals.
David Yeung, Co-founder and CEO of Green Monday, “When Green Monday was launched on Earth Day 10 years ago, it was an initiative taken by a group of passionate people who shared the same belief to Make Change Happen, to take urgent action that combats climate change and various global crises. Since then, Green Common and OmniFoods were born. Throughout the ensuing 10 years, both the Green Monday movement and Omni products have now expanded to over 20 markets. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all companies, corporate partners, influential leaders for your support. This impact cannot possibly happen without our collaboration and shared mission. That said, combating climate change and promoting sustainable diet is a marathon. Today, climate change crisis is more pressing than ever, not to mention the loss and disruption caused by the still ongoing pandemic. The clock is seriously ticking. Looking ahead, with the support from internal and external stakeholders, Green Monday will strive to dedicate our best innovation and efforts to contribute to a carbon net-zero future. Once again, on behalf of the Green Monday family, my heartfelt thank you for all our partners and supporters.”
Green Monday will continue to work with corporate partners to drive meaningful, positive impact in the community. Beginning last year, Great Eagle Group and Green Monday have partnered to establish the city’s very first Plant-Based Culinary Arts Academy designed to inspire the current and future of the F&B and Hospitality industries. The program presents innovative techniques and ideas to culinarians, encouraging them to bring more plant-based ingredients and dishes to the forefront of their menus and excite diners with plant-based options. The fourth session of the Academy is coming soon with details to be announced later.
